HOW WE ENGAGE WITH THE UNITED NATIONS

Global participants at H2OO’s Youth Summit for UN Ocean Decade in 2020 share what youth leadership means to them.

UN Ocean Decade

Heirs To Our Ocean is a Decade Implementation Partner of IOC/UNESCO’s Ocean Decade. Aligning with the Ocean Decade was a natural step as we work toward restoring our shared one-water system.

Our key contributions include:

Forming and supporting the U.S. Youth Action Council for the UN Ocean Decade

Developing a toolkit to support UN Member States in forming Youth Action Councils in their countries

Forming and supporting the Youth Inclusion Expert Working Group for the UN Ocean Decade

Child Rights Connect

Heirs To Our Ocean supports youth participation in the Children’s Advisory Team of Child Rights Connect, where youth leaders helped advance the right to free pre-primary and secondary education, contributing to the development of a new optional protocol. Through this engagement, they also engaged in global advocacy efforts, including a Vatican climate conference, a UN Special Rapporteur consultation, and the Aarhus Convention Task Force Meeting, amplifying youth voices in climate and ocean governance.

UN Environment Programme

In March 2024, Heirs To Our Ocean became accredited by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This means H2OO has gained observer status—together with more than 200 other global NGOs—and can get its voice heard directly prior to and during United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) sessions.

Heirs To Our Ocean sponsored five youth—from Tinian Island (CNMI), Brazil, and Texas—to attend and lead a workshop at the 2024 UN Ocean Decade Conference in Barcelona.
